Tribeca Festival 2026 Opening Night: Earth, Wind & Fire + Questlove Documentary

The countdown to the 25th anniversary of the Tribeca Festival just got real—and Opening Night is already shaping up to be something special.

Tribeca has officially announced that it will kick things off with the world premiere of an HBO Original documentary centered on the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire. Titled Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial VS That’s the Weight of the World), the film is directed by none other than Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson—and if you’ve been following his documentary work, you already know this is in very good hands.

But this isn’t just a screening—it’s a full-on moment.

Opening Night (June 3) at the iconic Beacon Theatre will include a live performance from Earth, Wind & Fire themselves, alongside The Roots. Yes, that combo. And honestly, that alone makes this one of the most can’t-miss events of the festival.

What makes this even more meaningful is the full-circle energy. Earth, Wind & Fire were part of Tribeca’s Opening Night celebrations back in 2017, and now they’re returning to help mark 25 years of a festival that has always leaned into the intersection of film, music, and culture.

And that’s really the story here.

Since its founding in the wake of September 11 attacks, Tribeca has built its identity around storytelling that brings people together. Over the years, it’s become a space where film doesn’t just live on screen—it expands into live experiences, conversations, and unforgettable performances.

You can see that legacy in the names that have come through: David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Taylor Swift, Bono, Nas—just to name a few. Tribeca doesn’t just celebrate artists; it curates moments.

And this year’s Opening Night feels like exactly that.

Questlove has spent the past two years diving deep into the story of Earth, Wind & Fire, exploring not just their catalog but their cultural impact—especially through the vision of founder Maurice White. If his past work is any indication, this documentary won’t just be informative—it’ll be immersive.

The night will wrap with an after-party at Tavern on the Green, because of course it will. It’s Tribeca.

And if this is how they’re opening the festival, it’s a strong signal that the 25th anniversary isn’t just about looking back—it’s about celebrating the kind of cultural moments that only Tribeca can deliver.

The full lineup is still on the way, but Opening Night already feels like a statement: music, film, legacy, and community—all in one night.
