Lena Hall Gets Real About Ali, Mental Health & Finding Truth in ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’

There are characters you watch… and then there are characters you feel.

Ali from Your Friends & Neighbors is definitely the latter.

When I sat down with Lena Hall, who brings Ali to life on the series, one thing became clear almost immediately—this isn’t just a performance. It’s a deeply grounded, honest portrayal of someone navigating life, mental health, and the complicated dynamics that come with both.

And honestly? That’s why so many people connect with her.

Ali Might Be the Most “Normal” One in the Room

As wild and chaotic as the world of Your Friends & Neighbors can be, Ali stands out—and not in the way you’d expect.

“I always get that,” Lena told me when I mentioned that Ali might be the most relatable character on the show. “She’s supposed to be the fragile one, and everyone’s like… I relate to her the most.”

And it makes sense.

Ali isn’t caught up in appearances. She’s not chasing status. She’s just trying to get through life—something that, let’s be real, all of us are doing in one way or another.

“There’s so much going on in the world,” Lena said. “Being an adult is very hard.”

No lies detected.

Mental Health—Without the Tropes

One of the most important aspects of Ali’s character is how the show handles her mental health—specifically her bipolar disorder.

And thankfully, it avoids the clichés.

“It was really important to me that she’s not defined by that,” Lena explained. “That’s not what defines her. What defines her is her creativity, her honesty, her sensitivity.”

That distinction matters.

Because instead of turning Ali into a stereotype, Your Friends & Neighbors presents her as a full human being—someone who experiences highs and lows, but isn’t reduced to them.

And even more importantly? The show explores how people treat her because of it.

The Real Struggle: How People See You

Season 2 leans heavily into something that hits way too close to home for a lot of people—what happens when others start seeing you as “fragile.”

“People start treating you like you can’t handle anything,” Lena said. “And that can really mess with you… because then you start believing it.”

That dynamic plays out especially within Ali’s family, where support sometimes turns into control.

And that’s where things get complicated.

Because as much as people think they’re helping, they can actually be holding you back.

“You can’t grow if you’re completely protected from the world,” she added.

That Scene—Yeah, We Need to Talk About It

There’s a moment this season—if you’ve seen it, you already know—that perfectly captures who Ali is at her core.

She stops mid-performance, drops the façade, and just… tells the truth.

No filter. No fear. Just honesty.

And instead of being judged?

She’s supported.

That’s powerful.

Because for anyone who’s struggled with mental health, being seen and accepted in that way isn’t just meaningful—it’s everything.

Jon Hamm, James Marsden & Controlled Chaos

Now let’s talk about the energy shift this season—because wow.

With Jon Hamm and James Marsden sharing the screen, things get… intense.

According to Lena, their dynamic is one of her favorite parts of Season 2—even though she’s not in those scenes.

“He comes in like a firecracker and just blows everything up,” she said about Marsden’s character. “It’s like a constant… you know… measuring contest between them.”

And honestly? She’s not wrong.

It’s layered, it’s tense, and it adds a whole new level of unpredictability to the show.

From Soap Operas to Prestige TV

Long before this role, Lena got her start on All My Children—and the experience was… intense.

“We’d get the script on set and have to learn it in real time,” she told me. “No rehearsals. Nothing.”

And if you know soaps, you know that’s no joke.

But that experience shaped her.

It taught her timing, camera awareness, and how to trust her instincts—skills that clearly translate into the more intimate, cinematic style of Your Friends & Neighbors.

Music, Creativity & What’s Next

If you didn’t know—Lena can sing.

Like… really sing.

Her performances on the show (yes, those are covers) have become fan favorites, and she’s even taken things a step further by releasing full versions of the songs herself.

And while Season 2 doesn’t feature new original music from Ali, Lena teased what’s coming next—and it’s a shift.

Her last album? Emotional. Heavy. Reflective.

The next one?

“It’s a bop,” she said with a laugh.

We’ll be seated.

Why Ali Matters

At the end of the day, Ali resonates because she reflects something real.

Not perfection. Not chaos. Just… truth.

The need to be seen. The fight to be understood. The struggle to prove—to yourself and others—that you’re capable.

And thanks to Lena Hall’s performance, that story is being told with care, honesty, and heart.
