Salem County Film & Arts Festival Coverage Continues with Filmmaker Benjamin Horner and His Film Blue

Coverage from the Salem County Film & Arts Festival continues with another conversation highlighting the incredible creative talent emerging from South Jersey.

While attending the festival in Woodstown, I spoke with filmmaker Benjamin Horner about his film Blue, a thought-provoking story centered around mental health, humanity, and the idea of perfection.

And honestly, the premise alone immediately grabs your attention.

What Is Blue About?

During our conversation, Ben explained that Blue follows a mentally ill man who is visited by an extraterrestrial being and presented with a life-changing choice:

Leave Earth behind for a perfect planet — or remain on Earth with all of life’s imperfections.

The catch?

He only has one hour to decide.

What makes the concept especially compelling is how grounded the conversation around the film became during the interview. When asked what I would personally choose, my answer was simple:

I would stay.

Life is imperfect for all of us, but that imperfection is part of growth. Mistakes, struggles, setbacks, and lessons shape who we become. A perfect world without challenges may sound appealing, but without adversity, do we truly learn anything?

That deeper philosophical layer is what makes Blue feel like more than just a science fiction story.

Celebrating Local Filmmakers in Salem County

Beyond discussing the film itself, one of the biggest themes throughout the interview was excitement surrounding the creative talent emerging throughout Salem County and South Jersey.

Ben shared that he grew up in Woodstown and spent years making movies with friends locally, which made participating in the festival especially meaningful for him.

One of the most surprising moments from the conversation was hearing that the festival reportedly received more than 170 submissions.

That number alone says a lot about the growing independent creative scene happening throughout New Jersey.

For years, many local creators may have felt isolated or overlooked. Events like the Salem County Film & Arts Festival are helping bring those artists together while giving filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their work publicly.

New Jersey’s Creative Scene Continues to Grow

The energy throughout the festival continues to reinforce something that has become increasingly clear:

New Jersey’s film and arts community is thriving.

From independent filmmakers to podcasters, artists, and creators, more local voices are stepping forward and building meaningful work throughout the state.

And this is still only the beginning of my coverage from the festival.

More interviews, filmmaker spotlights, and creator conversations from the Salem County Film & Arts Festival are still to come through The Buzz – BuzzWorthy Radio.
