MGM+ has unveiled the key art, official trailer and new images for American Hostage, a new eight-episode anthology series starring and executive produced by Emmy Award winner Jon Hamm.

The psychological thriller premieres Sunday, September 20, with a special two-episode premiere on MGM+, followed by new episodes weekly through the finale on Sunday, November 1.

Based on the acclaimed first season of the scripted podcast of the same name, American Hostage brings a harrowing true story to television, transporting audiences back to the 1970s for a story of journalism, crime and survival.

A Radio Reporter Caught in a Life-or-Death Crisis

American Hostage centers on Fred Heckman, a beloved Indianapolis radio reporter whose life changes dramatically when hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis demands to be interviewed on Heckman’s popular radio news program.

What begins as a demand for airtime quickly becomes a terrifying life-or-death situation, putting Heckman directly in the middle of a crisis that would capture the attention of the nation.

Jon Hamm stars as Fred Heckman, with Emmy Award nominee Giovanni Ribisi portraying Tony Kiritsis.

The series also features an impressive ensemble cast, including Kristoffer Polaha as Dick Hall, Emmy Award nominee William Jackson Harper as Ben Hairston, Emmy Award nominee Mireille Enos as Barbara Heckman, Jonathan Tucker as FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally and Kat Cunning as Ibby Hall.

From Podcast to Television

The television adaptation comes from co-creators Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers and is produced by Sony Pictures Television. Ryan also serves as executive producer.

American Hostage is also set to have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, adding another major milestone ahead of its MGM+ debut.

For podcast fans, the series represents another example of the growing connection between audio storytelling and television, taking a scripted podcast and expanding its story into a premium television series.

The executive producing team includes Shawn Ryan, Eileen Myers, Sharon Hoffman, Jon Hamm, Connie Tavel, Marney Hochman, Shawn Christensen, Gabriel Mason, Jen Roskind, Adam Arkin and Nina Lopez Corrado. Arkin and Lopez Corrado also serve as series directors.
