One of the most exciting parts of covering the Salem County Film & Arts Festival has been discovering just how many accomplished creators have roots right here in South Jersey.
During the festival, I had the chance to speak with filmmaker and video producer Michael Licisyn, who served as a panelist during the event and shared insight into his career in filmmaking, storytelling, and sports entertainment.
And yes — that also included a conversation about the legendary Philadelphia Phillies mascot, the Philly Phanatic.
From South Jersey to an Emmy Award
Michael explained that he is a lifelong South Jersey resident and currently works as a Senior Video Producer for the Philadelphia Phillies.
During our conversation, he talked about directing an action-adventure short film starring the Philly Phanatic — a project that ultimately earned his team an Emmy Award.
Honestly, hearing that story was incredible.
As someone from South Jersey myself, it’s inspiring to meet creators who have been able to take their talents and apply them on major stages while still staying connected to where they came from.
And if you know Philadelphia sports culture at all, you know the Phanatic is basically a celebrity in his own right.
South Jersey’s Creative Talent Deserves More Recognition
One of the strongest themes throughout our conversation was the idea that South Jersey often gets overlooked creatively despite having an incredible amount of artistic talent.
Michael spoke about how New Jersey’s unique location between New York and Philadelphia naturally cultivates artists, filmmakers, musicians, and storytellers. Over generations, those creative influences have continued spreading throughout communities across the state.
But as he pointed out, South Jersey does not always receive the same attention as North Jersey.
That’s part of why events like the Salem County Film & Arts Festival feel so important.
They give local creators a platform.
And after spending the day speaking with filmmakers, artists, and storytellers from across the region, I can honestly say I’ve been blown away by the amount of talent here.
A Growing Hub for Film and Creativity
Michael also spoke about how much he enjoys filming throughout South Jersey and why the area works so well for creators.
From actors and musicians to filmmakers and artists, there is a growing creative community throughout the region that deserves far more visibility than it often receives.
That sense of pride in local artistry has become a recurring theme throughout my festival coverage.
And honestly, it’s been refreshing to see.
