Investigative journalist and Rolling Stone senior writer Paul Solotaroff returns to The Buzz – BuzzWorthy Radio for an explosive and deeply emotional conversation about the continuing investigation at the center of The Devil’s Quarry, the acclaimed true-crime podcast featured as part of Bone Valley from Lava for Good.
When Paul first joined me earlier this year, we discussed the disappearance and murder of Josette Wright, the wrongful convictions connected to her case, and the disturbing questions surrounding Howard Gombert. At the time, I thought the revelations were shocking enough. However, with the arrival of the latest season, which shifts attention toward Robin Murphy’s disappearance, the investigation has become even more troubling.
During our latest conversation, Paul discusses the years he and his investigative team have spent examining the cases, the evidence they say points toward Gombert, and the failures of law enforcement that he believes allowed a dangerous individual to evade further accountability. We also explore why investigators failed to act on certain evidence, the reopening of Robin Murphy’s case, and the serious concerns surrounding Gombert’s anticipated release from prison.
One of the most disturbing aspects of our discussion involves the survivors who have spoken about their experiences and the fears they continue to carry. Paul shares allegations concerning threats made from prison and explains why he believes immediate action is necessary to protect potential victims.
As our conversation progressed, I found myself becoming increasingly frustrated by the questions that remained unanswered. At one point, I told Paul it was my turn to get on my soapbox. I questioned how so many warning signs could seemingly go unaddressed and why the systems designed to protect people so often appear to respond only after tragedy has occurred.
That discussion became especially personal when I shared that I recently lost a very good friend to domestic violence. Despite her efforts to protect herself, her life was taken. It is something that continues to weigh heavily on me, and hearing about the fears expressed by survivors in this investigation brought those feelings to the surface.
Paul and I also discuss the role of investigative journalism, the responsibility of public officials, and the importance of ensuring that victims and their families are not forgotten. His reporting has helped bring renewed attention to these cases, including an upcoming two-hour ABC 20/20 special.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Since our interview was recorded, the ABC 20/20 special examining the cases featured in The Devil’s Quarry has been rescheduled to Friday, November 13, 2026. Although our conversation references the previously announced October 30 date, November 13 is the updated broadcast date provided to me.
Anyone with information related to these cases is encouraged to contact the tip line featured in The Devil’s Quarry at 888-257-7694.
This is one of the most intense conversations I’ve had this season. It is not an easy discussion, but it is an important one. My thanks to Paul Solotaroff for returning to The Buzz, continuing to share his reporting, and remaining committed to seeking answers for the families and survivors.
