In this special bonus episode of The Buzz – BuzzWorthy Radio, Michael O’Keefe and Elizabeth A. Davis join me to discuss A Break in the Rain, a film that explores grief, family, connection, and the healing power of music.
O’Keefe stars as Jake, a man carrying profound loss after the deaths of his wife and son. His grief has also created distance between him and the family still around him. That begins to change through an unexpected connection with Catriona, played by Davis.
For O’Keefe, Jake’s journey is ultimately about allowing himself to feel what he has spent so much time avoiding.
“The journey of the film that he goes through is he has to come out of his grief and he has to come out of his withdrawal in order to connect with his daughter-in-law and his grandkids,” O’Keefe explains.
Music becomes an essential part of that transformation. As Jake and Catriona begin creating together, their collaboration opens a door that conversation alone could not.
Davis sees their relationship as an example of how someone slightly removed from our closest relationships can sometimes help us confront truths that those nearest to us cannot.
“They just kind of lock arms and say, ‘I think we’re gonna find the courage in each other to do what we need to do, to move into our lives in a different way,’” Davis says.
The conversation then takes an unexpectedly personal turn.
Davis reveals that “Empty Boots,” one of the songs she wrote for the film, was inspired by her grandfather, who struggled to tell his children that he loved them.
“For this song to be in this film about helping people love the other people around them… it also serves as an homage to my family,” Davis shares.
She explains that despite the love within those relationships, expressing it verbally was difficult. Through “Empty Boots,” music became another way of communicating those emotions—and ultimately a source of healing within her own family.
That personal connection mirrors the larger story at the heart of A Break in the Rain: people finding the courage to reconnect, express what has gone unsaid, and move through grief rather than remain trapped inside it.
As Davis puts it, that is part of what artists are ultimately trying to offer: “expression, music, connection.”
