“All Animals Are Equal…” — Until They’re Not: Andy Serkis & Iman Vellani Talk Animal Farm

There are some stories that never lose their bite—and Animal Farm is one of them.

I had the chance to sit down with visionary director Andy Serkis and rising star Iman Vellani to talk about their new animated adaptation of Animal Farm—a project that’s been nearly 15 years in the making.

Serkis revealed that the idea first sparked while working on Rise of the Planet of the Apes. In the middle of crafting a story about rebellion and freedom, he realized Orwell’s allegory was overdue for a modern retelling—one that speaks directly to today’s audience.

Originally envisioned as a darker, performance-capture film, the project evolved into animation to strike a balance—making it accessible while still preserving its deeply political themes.

And those themes? They hit.

This version of Animal Farm doesn’t shy away from its core message: how movements built on equality can be corrupted by power. Watching it now, it’s hard not to draw parallels to the world around us.

But what makes this adaptation stand out is its ability to balance that weight with moments of humor and charm.

Voicing two characters, Vellani brings energy and comedic timing that cuts through the film’s heavier undertones. She even shared that one of her favorite moments involves a hilariously unexpected “lesson in seduction”—a reminder that even in satire, there’s room for fun.

And then there’s the cast.

We’re talking Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Glenn Close, Woody Harrelson, and more—many of whom signed on over a decade ago simply because they believed in Orwell’s story.

Even the film’s more comedic characters—like the scene-stealing Rooster—serve a purpose. As Serkis put it, he’s the kind of character who “speaks the obvious”… something the world could probably use more of.

At its core, Animal Farm is still what it’s always been: a warning.

But in 2026, it feels less like a history lesson—and more like a mirror.
