The BUZZ had the opportunity to attend the latest PaleyImpact event celebrating, “Beyond the Gates,” at the Paley Center for Media. CBS Daytime will be making history as this is the first new daytime drama to premiere since 1999, as well as feature a predominantly African-American cast in an hour-long format. NBC had done something similar with the series, “Generations,” which premiered in 1989 and lasted until 1991. However, the show was only a 30-minute format. “Beyond the Gates” is set to open up a new door for daytime television and shining a light on not only black excellence, but it will also shine on daytime soap excellence as a whole.
Tamara Tunie stars as matriarch Anita Dupree and Daphnée Duplaix plays daughter Dr. Nicole Dupree-Richardson. We spoke with Tunie about her history in the soap opera genre, especially in the Procter & Gamble family, when she originated the role of Jessica Griffin on, “As The World Turns.” We spoke her former character’s relationships in Oakdale, including the interracial relationship between Jessica and Duncan McKechnie, as well as the exploration of date rape between Jessica and Marshall Travers.
Duplaix talked about how while Nicole may be the golden child, her halo could be a little bit tarnished. The actress, who also appeared in the soaps, “Passions,” and, “One Life to Live,” talked about how “Beyond the Gates” is not going to be your traditional soap. She also gave us a tease that there was a scene that she watched that actually caused her to tear up! What could possibly be coming that this occurs? Looks like we have to tune in to find out!
“Beyond the Gates” is set to premiere on Monday, February 24th at 2PM ET/1PM PT on CBS, and streaming on Paramount+.
