The hit series Scarpetta takes a unique approach to storytelling, with the same character portrayed across different timelines. In an exclusive conversation, actors Simon Baker and Hunter Parrish discuss the challenges and excitement of bringing this complex character to life.
Hunter Parrish, stepping into a role already established in the timeline, shares his approach: “It’s exciting. Our timeline is post-mortem, the first book. We’re introducing brand-new viewers to Scarpetta while also honoring fans who have followed the books for over 25 years. I felt excited to embody what is there and bring it to life authentically.” Hunter also notes the fun of weaving in new elements not present in the books, adding freshness while respecting the source material.
Simon Baker, who portrays the same character in the other timeline, reflects on collaboration with Hunter. “We didn’t have much time before shooting because Hunter got cast very late. He was gracious in accepting the choices I’d already made, but ultimately, you have to make it your own when you get on set. There’s trust involved when someone else is playing half of your character.”
The conversation also touches on Simon’s personal connection to the material. His mother, a longtime fan of the books, followed the series closely as Simon prepared for the role. Simon laughs, “She made a few noises, like ‘hmm, we’ll see,’ knowing adaptations are always different.”
With layered timelines, authentic performances, and a deep respect for Patricia Cornwell’s work, the series promises a gripping and cinematic experience. Scarpetta premieres on Prime Video on March 11th, and both actors hope viewers enjoy it as much as they loved bringing it to life.
