The iconic character Kay Scarpetta has captivated readers for decades, and now she’s stepping off the page and onto the screen. In an exclusive conversation, author Patricia Cornwell and showrunner Liz Sarnoff share insights into the adaptation process and what it takes to honor a beloved literary figure while making her cinematic.
Patricia Cornwell opens up about her protective instincts for Kay, reflecting on the responsibility of translating her character to a new medium. “It was always a concern that the character would be turned into something unrecognizable, disappointing both me and millions of readers worldwide,” she admits.
Liz Sarnoff, who brought the adaptation to life, explains how she balanced the structure and cinematic feel while staying true to Cornwell’s vision. “You have to get inside the books backwards and forwards to understand the characters fully,” Liz says.
