The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announce the nominees for the Daytime Emmy Awards last week. There were plenty of surprising nominations, while there was also some glaring omissions. One of the most notable changes this year is the elimination of the Younger Performer category. Previous incarnations of this category were: Outstanding Younger Man/Outstanding Juvenile, Outstanding Ingenue/Outstanding Juvenile Female, and most notably Outstanding Younger Actor/Actress in a Drama Series. The Younger Performer category, which included all genders, was discontinued, and now all younger actors have to submit in either supporting or lead nominations.
Two most jarring snubs include Melody Thomas Scott and Colleen Zenk. Zenk, who plays Jordan on, “The Young and the Restless,” along with Thomas Scott’s Nikki, did phenomenal work last year with Jordan’s introduction, Nikki’s kidnapping and her return to the bottle. Fans on social media have expressed their upset that these two veteran actors did not make the final nominations. However, one worthy surprise was Eric Braeden’s lead actor nomination. The actor, who plays Victor Newman, has not been nominated for the Emmy since 2004, and previously won in 1998.
Another shock factor was the inclusion of Australian soap, “Neighbours.” The soap, which was brought back on Amazon’s Freevee, was included in two categories this year. This marks the first time an International soap has been nominated in the states. Also, Dick Van Dyke has earned a nomination for his guest appearance on, “Days of our Lives,” at 98 years old!
