High School, Friendship & Chaos | BRIAN Cast Interview at SXSW

At SXSW, some films make you laugh. Others make you squirm. BRIAN does both—and that’s exactly why it sticks.

I had the chance to sit down with the cast—Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Joshua Colley, Sam Song Li, Sophia Macy, and Jacob Moskovitz—to talk about this coming-of-age story that hits home for anyone who’s ever felt misunderstood, unseen, or just a little too honest for their own good.

“I Wish I Could Say That…”

Brian is unapologetically himself. He speaks without a filter—and while we might admire it, we also recognize the consequences that follow.

Joshua Colley’s character, Justin, represents the kind of friend everyone needs—supportive, forgiving, and unwavering. Justin teaches Brian lessons about seeing others while being seen himself, reminding us all that even the brightest, bubbliest people have hidden needs.

Every Character Has a “Brian” Moment

Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Joshua agreed: we all have a little Brian in us. Peyton shared a personal story about keeping a journal to manage all the things she wanted to say but couldn’t—a lesson in self-control and awareness.

It’s not just Brian. Characters like Kyle, Ashley, and even Teddy each represent pieces of ourselves navigating high school pressure, family expectations, and social dynamics. Sam Song Li said it best:

“Kyle’s way of helping Brian… is throwing him into the deep end. Not always efficient, but it comes from care. And in the end, it works.”

Humor, Honesty, and Awkward Truths

The film isn’t just heartfelt—it’s funny in ways you won’t see coming. Whether it’s Brian calling out a teacher or awkward high school mishaps, moments had me literally laughing out loud.

Sophia Macy’s Ashley pushes boundaries with humor, feminism, and shock value, showing that honesty—even when outrageous—can be respected and admired.

Behind the Scenes: Collaboration and Passion

With talents like William H. Macy and Seth Meyers as executive producers, the cast described a collaborative and supportive set. Peyton said:

“Everyone loved the story, the characters, and the bigger idea of telling authentic stories about real kids growing up. That energy is what made it so special.”

Why You Should Watch

BRIAN isn’t just a movie—it’s a mirror. It shows us awkward truths about ourselves, our friendships, and growing up. Whether you’re laughing, cringing, or feeling a pang of recognition, you’ll leave seeing yourself in someone—or many someones—in the film.
