For 35 years, Melody Thomas Scott has been entertaining audiences for her portrayal of Nikki Reed Newman on the CBS Daytime soap, “The Young and the Restless.” While she may have been married to many men, her heart will always lie with Victor Newman. The character of Nikki has dealt with so much over the years, including being in a cult, becoming a stripper, alcoholism, addicted to pain killers, and now dealing with the fact she has a son no one knew about except her and Kay Chancellor. Thomas Scott spoke with us about the addition of Ray Wise coming to the show as Ian Ward, the former cult leader, and revisiting the storyline with bringing Dylan to the mix:
“When you have an actor who can play a character evil in a charismatic way, you can’t help but watch. I was surprised they brought back the cult story. I didn’t know any of it was going to happen. I really thought the only reason Ian Ward was introduced was to segue the Steve Burton association with me, in regards to Dylan being my son. Then, I thought, they are just going to do this little sneaky thing with the cult, and that would be it. Maybe that was going to be it, but everyone loved Ray Wise so much. You get an actor that people love them in, and the writers see that. So, they decided to extend his stay, if he can. He is so busy with many projects right now, but I definitely don’t want him to go. (laughs)”
This week, Thomas Scott makes an appearance on the CBS sitcom, “The Crazy Ones.” We got to tease a little about exactly what the fans can expect from her character on the show:
“It’s totally crazy. They wrote the role FOR me as they are big fans of mine from ‘Y&R.’ I had to assume that somewhere, in the back of their brain, my storyline on the show kind of helped them decide she was going to be an alcoholic. It’s too much of a coincidence. And, it’s funny. I think that is why people like to see Nikki Newman drink, because somehow, it becomes funny when she does it. The character on ‘The Crazy Ones’ is similar like that, certainly with the flask. This poor woman is working the library with a flask in her pocket. (laughs) I loved it! It was great!”
As we spoke with Melody Thomas Scott, she talked about if we could ever see the potential of Nikki crossing over to sister soap, “The Bold and Beautiful.” In the glamorous world of Los Angeles, could Nikki and Deacon cross paths again? We delved into more Nikki history, her love with Victor Newman, and could we possibly see a LUSH Nikki once more?
