In his directorial debut, David Bushell brings fans an in-depth look into how comedy duo Cheech & Chong came to be. The documentary, “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie,” premiered last year at SXSW, and it made its worldwide debut in theaters this past April. It explored the the coming up of Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin in a time where we were still dealing with racism and equal rights.
Bushell talked about how he came to direct this film as he worked with the duo prior to this. We got to speak about how difficult/easy it was to find archive footage from the past five decades and incorporating several people from their lives into the movie. We dove into how accepting Cheech & Chong were in the African-American community, including opening up for predominant black artists, appearing on, “Soul Train,” and even Chong writing lyrics for Diana Ross.
Bushell’s other credits include producing the short film, “Jim Carrey: I Needed Color,” and the theatrical movie, “The Dallas Buyers Club.” He spoke about both films and how much of an impact they made in not only creating them, but for viewers alike.
Currently, you can see, “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie” on Amazon Prime with more streaming services to be added soon.
