Another long time cast member will be departing the SVU squad room. Dann Florek, who has played the role of Captain Donald Cragen since the first episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” is leaving the series. This exit comes shortly after Richard Belzer left the series as Sergeant John Munch.

Florek took to his Twitter and had this response for fans this past Friday:

“Friday was the last day 4 Cragen/Florek. It was a sweet send off! But he’ll live on in syndication land 4 evah!”

Executive Producer, Warren Leight, spoke with Zap2It when Belzer departed and explained how they try to keep “SVU” realistic:

“In the real world, which we try to very hard to simulate, NYPD has mandatory retirement before your 63rd birthday. And we were trying to figure out how to deal with it. The reason NYPD does it is because you can’t have 65-year-old guys running after guys. It is a hard and fast rule.”
